Program Information

DIETETIC INTERNSHIP GRADUATION REQUIREMENT

Satisfactory completion of Dietetic Internship Program requires:

  • attaining at least a competency level of 95% in all units

  • completing training of a minimum of 1400 hours  for the combined masters track and 1480 for non-degree track (including holidays and allowable time off).

 

MPH DEGREE AT UCLA GRADUATION REQUIREMENT:

  • Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA with no less than a "C" in all courses
  • Successfully complete 60 units of graduate study
  • Pass a comprehensive examination for degree conferment.

 

MS DEGREE AT CSULB GRADUATION REQUIREMENT:

  • Completion of a minimum of 39 units 
  • An advanced statistics course: EDP 519 or H/SC 503 or KPE 590 or consent of faculty advisor;
  • At least 18 units of 500/600 level courses in Family and Consumer Sciences; (Please see specific emphasis for the listing of courses.)
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or better;
  • A written Thesis or a Directed Project;
  • Oral presentation of the Thesis of Directed Project Report.

 

STIPEND

The funding of VA educational programs is determined annually and therefore is subject to change. The funding (per annum salary) allowance for the Combined VA Dietetic Internship tracks are currently $13,502 before deductions. The funding allowance for the Non-Degree Internship is currently $11,086 before deductions. This results in our interns receiving a pay of $8.88/hr and $7.11/hr for the combined and non-degree tracks respectively. Hourly payment only occur for the supervised practice portion of the program, those in the combined tracks will not receive payment while attending the university.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

For those enrolled in the Combined MPH track only, financial aid is available from UCLA. Information can be found at http://www.fao.ucla.edu/*

For both internship programs, scholarships are available through The American Dietetic Association Foundation. Interns are encouraged to apply for scholarships in the “Internship”  categories.

HEALTH SERVICES

Health Insurance is mandatory while at UCLA and is available from UCLA Health Services for an added cost. This insurance covers students while enrolled at UCLA. If you do not have health insurance, you must buy the insurance from UCLA Health Services, but if you have your own heath insurance, purchasing insurance from UCLA can be waived.

Health Insurance is not available through the VA Medical Center. The VA Medical Center will provide emergency care for illness and complete care for injury while on duty. All interns are encouraged to purchase health insurance for routine or other medical care for the duration of the internship program.

HOUSING

The Department of Veterans Affairs does not provide housing. Interns are therefore responsible for making their own housing arrangements.

TRANSPORTATION

A car is required for transportation to all rotations, affiliations and off station classes.  Parking at the VA Medical Center is free. There is a fee for parking at UCLA.  More detailed information about parking at UCLA can be found at http://www.transportation.ucla.edu/index.htm. *

COMPUTER MATCHING

All applicants to Dietetic Internships listed in the instruction booklet from D&D Digital Systems must participate in computer matching. Applicants should request instructions and a mark/sense card to prioritize their DI preferences. Applicants should request this material from any ADA-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics or from D&D Digital Systems. This request should be made in advance to allow turn around time for submitting mark/sense cards by the postmark deadline. There is no charge for this material. However, there is a $50 charge for computer matching that is due with the applicant's prioritized ranking.
