Mr. Bauman currently serves as the Deputy Network Director for the VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21). He was selected for this position in 2012 and his responsibilities include all matters relative to Financial Management; Capital Asset Management; Logistics; Occupational Safety; and Financial Quality Management at all 6 VISN 21 Health Care Systems and the Outpatient Clinic in Manila, Philippines.
The VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21) is one of 21 Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISNs) in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The Network serves veterans in thirty-six locations in northern and central California, northern Nevada, Hawaii, Philippines and other islands in the Pacific Basin. VISN 21 operates 49 geographically dispersed sites of care, with over 12,000 employees and an operating budget of approximately $2.9 billion. The Network provides a full continuum of health care and other services to more than 292,000 Veterans each year. Mr. Bauman has served on many national level committees and workgroups, including the NLC Capital & Logistics Sub-Committee; Acquisition Realignment Workgroup; National Consolidated Mail-out Pharmacy (CMOP) Advisory Board; VHA Logistics Data Validation Committee; and VHA Contracting Workgroup. He also serves on many regional and local committees, including Western States Network Consortium (WSNC) Steering Committee and the VISN 21 SPD Management Board.
Mr. Bauman has served 36 years in the US Navy (Active & Reserve). His most recent position was Command Master Chief, with Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Force during a tour in Iraq and Kuwait. He is a Vietnam Era veteran and also served on active duty during Operation Desert Storm. Mr. Bauman holds a Bachelor's of Science and Associate Degree in Business.
Associate Director of Administrative Operations
Susan Shyshka is the newest member of the GLA Executive Leadership Team as Associate Director for Administrative Operations. With a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan, she started as a Librarian at the VA Hospital in Nashville, TN in 1984. After working there for 4 years, she became a member of Learning Resources Service in VACO in Washington DC. She moved to California in 1991 to become the Assistant Chief of Library and Medical Records at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. She moved to VA Central California Health Care System (Fresno) as the Associate Director in 2001 after a year in Compliance at Palo Alto and after becoming a graduate of the LVA - Leadership VA Program in 2000, where her experiences helped to solidify her desire to become a leader in VA. She is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care executives and a Board Certified Health Care Executive. During her career she has participated in numerous educational and professional development activities including the Federal Interagency Institute, Advanced Clinical Access Coaches College, and the Health Care Leadership Institute
Ms. Shyshka lives in Los Angeles with her husband Jeff, retired VA employee, and her daughter Emily, who is currently a junior at UC Santa Barbara.
Associate Director, Acting Associate Director for the Director's Special Projects
Mr. Mark Murdock was appointed the Associate Director of the VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, on March 10, 2013. As the Associate Director, he is responsible for the operations of Canteen, Chaplain, Engineering, Environmental Management, Fiscal, Human Resources, Nutrition & Food, Patient Business, Pharmacy, Police, Prosthetics, Logistics, Veteran Satisfaction and Voluntary Services.
From August 1, 2011 - July 9, 2012, Mr. Mark Murdock served as Acting Associate Director of the Dayton VA Medical Center. Mr. Mark Murdock was appointed the Assistant Director of the VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio on September 26, 2010. As the Assistant Director, he is responsible for coordinating the administrative operations of the Community Living Center (Nursing Home) and directly accountable for Prosthetics and Sensory Aid Service, Voluntary/Recreation Therapy Service, Chaplain Service, and Veteran Satisfaction Service. Mr. Murdock is a native of Sackets Harbor, New York. Mr. Murdock is a graduate of Park University with a B.S. in Healthcare Management and holds a Master's Degree in Health Service Administration from Xavier University (OH). Mr. Murdock retired as a Medical Service Corp (MSC) Officer from the United States Air Force in 1999. During his Air Force career, Mr. Murdock was assigned to Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton OH, Charleston AFB, SC, Misawa AB, Japan, and Aviano AB, Italy. His VA career has included assignments as Health System Specialist, Surgical Service at the VAMC Dayton, OH; and most recently as the Program Manager, VISN 10/11 Tele-Nurse Triage Program, Dayton, OH. Mr. Murdock is board certified in healthcare administration by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) in which he holds membership as a Fellow (FACHE).a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the Greater Ohio Healthcare Leaders Forum (GOHLF).
Mr. Murdock and his wife, Stephanie, have four daughters.
Chief of Staff
Dr. Dean C. Norman was appointed Chief of Staff for the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System in December 1999. He is responsible for managing all of GLA's clinical, educational, and research operations. Dr. Norman began his administrative career with the VA in 1996 when he was appointed Chief Medical Officer (CMO) / Chief Operations Officer (COO) for the VA West Los Angeles Medical Center. As CMO, he maintained the responsibilities of the Chief of Staff and as COO he had additional responsibilities in the areas of Administrative Services, Facilities Management, Human Resources, and Financial Management.
Dr. Norman has been on the medical staff of the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and a member of UCLA faculty since July of 1983, when he joined the staff of Geriatric Research Education and Clinic Center (GRECC) as Assistant Clinical Director and UCLA Assistant Professor of Medicine. In August 1991, he was named Clinical Director of GRECC and was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine Residence at UCLA. From 1991 to 1994 he served as Director of the VA-UCLA Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program. Preceding his Chief of Staff appointment, Dr. Norman served as the Acting Chief of Staff and Acting Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care. He was promoted to Adjunct Professor of Medicine at UCLA in 1999.
Dr. Norman and his wife Jane have two children, Keith and Jill. When the VA does not require his clinical and administrative expertise, Dr. Norman enjoys spending time with his family, who share his hobbies of movie-watching and surfing.
Associate Director, Nursing and Patient Care Services
Ms. Marlene McCraw-Brewster, RN, MS has been with the Department of Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLA) for over 25 years. Ms. McCraw-Brewster was appointed Associate Director for Nursing and Patient Care Services in May 2009. She has held management roles in Neurology and Neurosurgery, Public Health, Student Health, Critical Care, and private sector administration. Ms. McCraw-Brewster spent the last three years as the Deputy Nurse Executive. Previous to that role, Ms. McCraw-Brewster was the Associate Chief Nurse-Geriatrics and Rehabilitative Care (GRC), bringing the GRC to higher levels of prestige and repute.
Ms. McCraw-Brewster is a member of the Executive Quadrad. Sharp leadership acumen and an outstanding ability to oversee multiple clinical services and hospital operations are demanded of Ms. McCraw-Brewster to spear-head positive momentum toward successful organizational goal achievement, especially the Nursing Magnet Designation journey. Ms. McCraw-Brewster is responsible for professional leadership, executive advice, and guidance on Nursing, Pharmacy, and Chaplain Programs and practice; and the integration of these programs into the system and community. She is also accountable for the day-to-day operations of Hospital Services which includes all acute inpatient beds, the Admission/Discharge and Transfer Center, Patient Escort Services, and the Case Management program. As a member of the Executive Leadership team, Ms. McCraw-Brewster participates fully in policy decision-making and the resolution process of the most complex and sensitive operational issues. She is a full member of the GLA Executive Leadership Board and Resources Council.
Associate Director, Ambulatory Care and Facility Services
Mr. David L. Holt was appointed as Associate Director for Ambulatory Care and Facility Services on August 12, 2011. He served from 2000 to 2011 as the Network Planner and Network My HealtheVet Coordinator for the VA Desert Pacific Healthcare Network (VISN 22), along with his role as Staff Assistant to the Director for the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System. From 1996-2000 he was the VISN 22 Communications Officer and Health Systems Specialist. Mr. Holt served from 1989 - 1996 as the Staff Assistant to the Director, Staff Assistant to the Chief of Staff and Public Affairs Officer for the Los Angeles Ambulatory Care Clinic (LAACC) prior to the facility's integration with the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Prior to the creation of Networks (VISNs), he served as the District Planner for Medical District #25, located at the West Los Angeles campus of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Mr. Holt has a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Redlands and a Bachelors Degree from BYU. Mr. Holt is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).
