Ebola Update

October 17, 2014

Dear Veterans, two weeks ago VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System appointed an interdisciplinary Steering Committee made up of clinical leaders, infection control personnel, emergency management, environmental management and public affairs to deal with the emerging threat of Ebola infection.  Although the risk is extremely small, our first goal is to protect patients, staff and visitors by ensuring we are fully prepared.

To date we have focused primarily on the Emergency Department (ED) and the inpatient environment since the ED is the likely entry point for suspected cases. We have conducted two drills and are ensuring ongoing training of personnel.  In the near future, we will be providing training for personnel in other clinical areas.

The Steering Committee will begin educational sessions for staff tomorrow and further information will be made available so that any employee can learn the latest about Ebola from our highly knowledgeable infectious diseases staff. In the meantime, clinical areas are screening patients for recent travel to West Africa or contact with potentially infected persons.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider.
