The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLA) Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS), also referred as physiatry (fiz eye’ a tree), is a medical specialty concerned with evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients with limited function as a consequence of disease, injury, impairment, and/or activity limitation. Emphasis is placed on maximal restoration of the physical, psychological, social, and vocational functions of the person, on the maintenance of health and the prevention of secondary complications to activity limitation and on the alleviation of pain. PM&RS, a national VA Program of Excellence, provides comprehensive rehabilitation services along a continuum of care from ambulatory and acute to long term care.
WLA Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and the Vocational Rehabilitation section is accredited by CARF, the Rehabilitation Commission, and by JCAHO, the Joint Commision of Healthcare Organizations.
