On August 15, 2017 The Twilight Brigade will celebrate its 20th anniversary of service to our Veterans. The Brigade is located on the campus of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. The landmark anniversary recognizes a valuable relationship between the dedicated volunteers of The Twilight Brigade, and the honored military Veterans being cared for by the Veteran’s Health Administration.

The Twilight Brigade, was guided into existence by co-founder, Dannion Brinkley It is an organization that has recruited and trained over 6,000 volunteers nationwide to be at the bedside of hospitalized, palliative care Veterans.

Volunteers cover a wide range. They include all ages, and various walks of life. Volunteers prefer to serve quietly without seeking reward or recognition. As a caring presence at the bedside, they have been trained to help facilitate the three end-of-life values: comfort, safety, and peaceful closure. The Twilight Brigade’s chapter, in Los Angeles, continues to provide these compassionate values and more over the past 20 years.

When asked what inspired the creation of The Twilight Brigade, Brinkley said, “As a former Marine, and the son of a disabled WWII Veteran, I have a unique perspective on the needs of the men and women who have served our country. I wanted to honor their service to our country.”

According to Brinkley, “The Twilight Brigade’s mission is carried on today with excellence by its dedicated volunteers. They are there for our Veterans, and their families as, together, the final battle is waged.”

Program Accomplishments

When asked to offer significant highlights over the past 20 years, Brinkley thought for a moment and replied,

“Our partnership with the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System has been a wonderful relationship. VAGLAHS has worked diligently to incorporate integrated and complimentary care focused programs with us.

I can also share this particular benchmark: Over 660,000 veterans are passing away each year, Despite the personal emotional toll it takes on our volunteers The Twilight Brigade is still going strong. Our volunteers are dedicated and resilient!”
