METRO Wilshire On/Off Ramp Closures
Significant Traffic Delays Expected
UPDATE (6/20) - ADDITIONAL TEMPORARY CLOSURE ON SEPULVEDA and WILSHIRE ROADS: Demolition of the Wilshire ramps, which will be very loud, will take 3-4 nights from 9:00 pm – 10:00 am. Demolition begins on the 2nd or 3rd night of the 90-day closure and requires full closure of Sepulveda from Wilshire to Montana (Constitution gate will be closed during this time) as well as a two lane closure of westbound Wilshire from Veteran to Federal.
Location: West Los Angeles (WLA)
Dates: At 9:00 pm on June 22, 2012, LA METRO will close for approximately 90 days:
- I-405 Northbound off-ramp to Westbound Wilshire
- Westbound Wilshire on-ramp to I-405 Northbound
Commute Time: LA METRO is advising commuters to double their drive time in anticipation of the increased traffic. For example, if your commute is 30 minutes, take an extra 30 minutes to allow for traffic.
Impact to WLA: Expect traffic delays around the WLA campus to increase significantly so please plan accordingly. In addition, these closures will result in detours for prolonged periods and many non-VA commuters will want to use the VA campus as a cut-through route around the traffic.
Action Plan: To ensure patient safety during the METRO Wilshire ramp closures, GLA will close two gates during the construction period located on Eisenhower and Gorham Ave. Each afternoon, approximately 1,200 non-VA vehicles enter the WLA campus through the Eisenhower Ave. gate clogging campus roads with traffic. This extreme influx of vehicles has created a patient safety concern, as emergency vehicles and patient transport vehicles have difficulty in quickly accessing certain campus buildings and patient care areas.
This traffic mitigation plan supports GLA’s mission of providing Veterans with Patient-Centered Care in a safe and healing environment. We realize this causes some difficulties with the staff and Veterans who use these gates to access WLA and we apologize for the inconvenience. The planned gate closures will reduce traffic congestion on the north side of WLA campus and ensure patient safety by maintaining adequate through ways for emergency service vehicles.

METRO Way Ahead:
This is the first of eight ramps joining Wilshire Blvd and the I-405 freeway construction and demolition projects of series of ramp construction and closures along the 405 freeway. On Friday, June 22, 2012, the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project will begin demolishing. Reconstruction of all eight Wilshire ramps is expected to take more than one year.
These closures and the subsequent reconstruction of the other six Wilshire ramps are expected to create significant temporary impacts to Wilshire Blvd and adjoining streets, such as Federal Av, Sepulveda Blvd and Veteran Av. Sunset Blvd and Santa Monica are recommended alternatives.
Construction of the new ramps will reduce the conflict between Wilshire Blvd and the I-405 as it crosses Wilshire Blvd. In turn, this should reduce backup at other north/south streets, such as Westwood Bl and Veteran Bl.For more information explaining the reconstruction:
