Fellowship Training in Geriatric Medicine
GOAL
The VA-UCLA Multicampus Program in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology is designed to provide training for physicians who will play key roles in the future of geriatric health care. Fellows will build upon general medical knowledge to gain skills in providing state-of-the-art care to the full spectrum of the elderly population, from the healthy to the very frail.
Clinical Rotations at VA West Los Angeles Health Care Center
- The 10 bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) unit provides comprehensive and interdisciplinary geriatric assessments for patients with geriatric syndromes.
- The Nursing Home Care Unit provides a full spectrum of rehabilitative, skilled medical and behavioral programs.
- Outpatient services include a primary care clinic for frail elderly and outreach screening of age-related illnesses and geriatric syndromes in a community setting.

Clinical Rotations at VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center and Nursing Home
Fellows have primary care responsibilities in:
- Outpatient Geriatric Medicine Clinics providing primary care, and consultation services
- Nursing Home providing, medical care to residents and longitudinal primary care to a panel of nursing home residents
- Home Based Health Care providing care to frail home-bound older adults
Eligibility
Physicians who are committed to a career in geriatric medicine, who have completed residency training in internal medicine or family practice, and are board certified or eligible in these specialties are invited to apply. Advanced Geriatric Medicine Fellowship
Fellows are eligible to pursue a 2nd year Special Fellowships Program in Advanced Geriatrics (SFPAG), which will support post-residency training in geriatrics for a select group of outstanding geriatricians, geriatric psychiatrists, and other subspecialties who have completed their Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) subspecialty training. This program provides outstanding research training, interdisciplinary educational opportunities and advanced clinical and program administration learning opportunities. The program offers two paths: Physician-Investigator or Clinician Educator Administrator. This national program's website is located at the West Los Angeles GRECC.
